What About Mold?
Mold does NOT like a well-ventilated attic. A properly ventilated attic is essential to achieving A Cooler House, but an important side-benefit is the greatly decreased risk of mold growth. Dead air spaces provide fertile breeding ground for mold, so air MOVEMENT is critical. Active exhaust vents, such as power vents or turbines (a.k.a. whirly-birds), require a source of intake ventilation to provide air movement. The best and most common source of fresh intake air is a properly installed soffit (eve) vent system. To avoid dead spots, soffit vents should be located as evenly as possible around the entire perimeter of the attic.
acoolerhouse.com offers products that do not support mold growth:
LOMIT Sprayed Radiant Barrier is a heat-blocking product that is applied to the underside of roof decking. LOMIT sprayed radiant barrier does not support mold growth or formation. LOMIT has been installed extensively in HUMID Florida attics for nearly twenty years without a single case of mold formation. Condensation and trapped moisture can be an issue with foil-based radiant barriers. LOMIT is water permeable, will not trap moisture and does not allow condensation.
